Yelp! has become my new favorite tool with this new pet project of mine and that’s exactly how I found out about Perry’s special brunch. I read one quick review, saw the words “drag” and “queen” and knew that I wanted to go.
We waited about 1.5 hrs after putting our name on a cell phone waiting list (at around 11:30 it was packed). We were actually never called but I went back and managed to score the worst seats in the place (tucked in a corner with no clear view of the room). The alternative would have been to wait an hour later or the next show to start. Read: go early.
Perry’s features a buffet brunch and drag queen show for a flat rate of $25. The buffett brunch has everything from bacon and eggs to sushi and falafel. It’s not bad at all for a buffet (which usually disgusts the germophobic only child me). The line for the buffet would have also been an annoyance, but with the aforementioned shitty seats it gave us an opportunity to see the drag queens better.
Besides the buffet we also got a pitcher of mimosas, naturally ($30, and strong!).
However, the drag queens would be reason number one for coming to the brunch. The show part is basically drag queens coming out to your typical diva music walking around and socializing (it’s more exciting then I make it sound, but I don’t want to ruin any anticipation). You can also tip them to do “special tricks”. We saw about 3 drag queens, despite missing the very beginnig of the show.
I’m probably out of the loop but I’m surprised I had never heard of Perry’s before.
This is a big spot for people celebrating weddings, birthdays and other occasions. I think it’s perfect for taking an out of town guest (like your college roommate) to kick off an exciting weekend in DC. By no means it a regualar brunch spot, but definitely an entertaining and very risqué one.
Note: This brunch is definitely rated R. Not for children, the prudish (unless it’s for kicks to the less prudish), or the faint of heart. Think twice about impressing your future mother -in-law here, unless she’s awesome of course.
