We scheduled a 1:15 brunch reservation at Medium Rare to allow for a leisurely morning. Well, Sydney and I were leisurely, our friend Lindsay went to spin class. Needless to say, by 1:15 we hadn’t eaten at all and were all jonesing for some steak. They were pretty busy though, and didn’t seat us until maybe 25 minutes later. During that time I started plotting an escape to Dino across the street while Lindsay and I took turns bothering the hostess who was not amused.
Once we were seated, though, things turned around. The service was quick and the menu simple. The deal is $23 for bottomless mimosas or Bloody Marys, a small starter or fruit or yogurt and an entree. Since it’s a steak place we all wanted the steak and eggs. Let’s be real: only go here if you want steak. We actually really liked the Bloody Marys as well. They were refreshing and not too thick or spicy. Once we had these we were happy again.
The steak and eggs has two options for eggs: scrambled or “perfectly poached.” If you like poached, go with that; you can dip your fries—er, frites—in yolk and their special sauce topping the steak. By the end we were satiated but did not feel disgusting.
Finally, check out the bathroom. Feared restaurant critic Tom Siestema was not amused, but I was. A spoken word track of French to English translations compliments you as you wash your hands: “May I look at you for a little bit longer?” it asks. I took a video for you:
Be sure to also check out their new Eastern Market location as well!
