We recently attended an event at Macy’s with Carl Ray, makeup artist to Michelle Obama. Being exceptionally bad at all things makeup and beauty, we went into it a little scared. The First Makeup Artist was totally helpful, however, and demonstrated a day look and evening look while providing lots of tips along the way. We’ve collected the best tips below!
1. Pick your eyeshadow color like you pick your clothes.
Sometimes you like a color but it doesn’t look good on you. I look bad in yellow so I don’t buy yellow clothes. If you always wear green because you look great in green, green eyeshadow will flatter you, too.
2. Make your makeup last with a setting spray.
It’s wedding season and makeup-melting DC summer is fast approaching. Finish off your makeup with a setting spray before you head out to make it last. We like to maximize Sunday Funday and be on the go ALLLL day, so I can appreciate this as a critical step. Carl suggests MAC’s.
3. Don’t get TOO contour-happy.
Contouring is super popular right now, but it can look heavy. Reserve this trick for evening looks or days where you’ll be filmed or photographed. Contoured looks make you look great on camera. If you want to learn to contour, YouTube is your best friend.
4. Line, Fill, Blot, Repeat.
I hate wearing lipstick because it never seems to stay put. Carl says to use lip liner first, fully filling in the lip. Then apply lip color, blot, and apply again. Who knew!?
5. Prime your eyelid with concealer.
Cover your eyelid with concealer before applying eye makeup, and eyeshadow will stay all day. Also, don’t forget to put concealer in the inner corner to brighten up your eye.
6. Lip gloss, blotting paper, concealer.
Carl’s recommended purse essentials. Go for the coral lip. Coral is in.
So how did Carl get started doing makeup? His parents divorced when he was a teenager and he noticed his mom needed help with her look to get back out there. What a good kid. Thanks Carl!
